Film of the day: Bohemian Rhapsody

Bohemian Rhapsody - Rami Malek and Gwilym Lee

Fresh from scooping a hatful of Oscars, Baftas and Golden Globes, and in the unlikely event that you haven’t already seen it, Bohemian Rhapsody, the thoroughbred biopic of the rise of Freddie Mercury and Queen, arrives in Sky Store from today.

Rock biopics are rarely much fun as they generally cast lookalike performers with none of the stage charisma of the person they are playing – think Stars in Their Eyes minus even that level of talent. Bohemian Rhapsody, though, is certainly an exception to the rule; it thunders a roundhouse of a soundtrack of the band’s endless catalogue of amazing music, but it also manages to sensitively explore the complex character and insecurities of Freddie (played here by the excellent Rami Malek).

It does not matter if you were not a Queen fan first time around, this is definitely a film worth seeing and even though it is a much-diminished experience on the small screen, it is nevertheless the movie highlight of today, tomorrow and this week.

Brilliant, touching and richly deserving of the awards Malek and company have won.

Film of the day: Bohemian Rhapsody from Monday 4 March in SkyStore.
