Film of the day: Chinatown

Chinatown - Jack Nicholson

Roman Polanski’s sublime neo noir classic was nominated for 11 Oscars when released in 1974 and is as fresh and strong now as ever. Set in 1930s Los Angeles, Jack Nicholson plays a cynical private detective whose prying into an adultery case reveals a far -reaching web of corporate/local government corruption and murder.

This is a film to be savoured and whatever your opinion of Polanski there is no disputing it is a masterly work from beginning to end. Along with Nicholson, Faye Dunaway and John Huston are excellent as patriarch and daughter of the moneyed southern Californian family around whom the puzzle is worked.
