Pixar Studio’s 2017 family-oriented animated feature, Coco, explores the rich South American culture involved in the Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) festival in a film which tells the story of a young boy uncovering his ancestry and a forbidden love for music during his incredible adventure in the ghostly world of the dead. Directed and co-written by Lee Unkrich, the film stars Anthony Gonzalez, Gael García Bernal and Benjamin Bratt amongst a host of others.

Miguel, a twelve year-old boy born in Southern Mexico, is forced to neglect his dreams and hide his passion for music since it has been banned in his family for the past two generations – his great-great-grandmother forbade it after she was abandoned by her lover when he took off to pursuit a career in music. On the annual day of the dead festival, Miguel decides to go against his family’s wishes and steals his great-great-grandfather’s guitar from his family’s mausoleum, setting him on an extraordinary journey which takes him into the land of the dead.
