Film of the Day – Daphne

Before you make any preconceptions, no, this is not a cheap Scooby-Doo spin-off film. Rather, this 2017 British drama – penned by Nico Mesinga and directed by Peter Mackie Burns – presents a remarkably well-performed character study of a woman and her pursuit of happiness. The film stars Hail Caesar’s Emily Beecham in the lead role as Daphne. Geraldine James, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor and Nathaniel Martello-White also hold major roles.

Daphne is a woman who is stuck between her hectic career as a waitress and her busy nightlife, struggling to find a sense of satisfaction in the monotonous cycles of her everyday life. After saving a shopkeeper’s life following a robbery gone wrong, Daphne has a realisation and is forced to accept and pursue change in her life in her pursuit of happiness.
