Benedict Cumberbatch joins fellow Brits Tom Hiddlestone and Martin Freeman in the new wave of Marvel Cinematic movies with his debut as the titular warlock; Doctor Strange. Featuring Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkaelson and Chiwetel Ejiofor, the film follows top brain surgeon Stephen Strange and his journey from a talented but overall pretty ordinary medical professional to something far greater.
After an unfortunate accident leaves surgeon Hugo Strange with limited movement in his hands, the titular travels to Nepal to investigate experimental “spiritual” remedies in a bid to get his livelihood back – against the protests of his former lover (Rachel McAdams). There he eventually finds a secluded compounded home to sorcerers who, because of his arrogance and closed mindedness refuse to teach him what he needs to know to heal his hands. In his desperation, Strange pleads with the sorcerers leader; a woman known as The Ancient One (Swinton) who then reluctantly agrees to train him in the ways of magic, setting the once-acclaimed surgeon on a path which tests the very limits of reality.
Doctor Strange – Tuesday 7:00pm on Sky Cinema (Hits).
