Get yourself a pint of butter-beer, strap- in and prepare for more awe-inspiring magical antics than you can shake a wand at, as Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander – who authored the eponymous Hogwartian text – bursts onto screens for the first instalment of J.K Rowling’s follow-up prequel series to the Harry Potter books/films. Soon to be followed by the 2018 film; The Crimes of Grindelwald, fantastic Beasts features a star studded cast including, Collin Farrell, Dan Fogle, Ezra Miller and Katherine Waterston – all under the direction of veteran Harry Potter show-runner David Yates.
The film picks up in 1920s America, following the journey of Newt Scamander as he crosses the Atlantic to New York City, equipped with a magically enlarged suitcase filled with rare and potentially dangerous beasts. Aboard the boat, he inadvertently switches suit-cases with an equally unaware no-maj (someone without magic) which leads to the creatures being released in the North-American city, prompting havoc to ensue. With the help of out-of-favour magical official Tina Goldstein (Waterston) and the same no-maj baker who let the beasts out (Fogle), Scamander embarks on an adventure to retrieve the magical creatures.
But things aren’t as they seem in New York and, as dark forces circle the city, Newt and his new companions find themselves in the midst of a dangerous conspiracy which threatens to expose the once secretive wizarding world for ever.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – Saturday 6:45pm on Sky Cinema (Sci-fi and Horror).
