Director James Gunn leads an all-star cast in the sequel to the explosively funny 2014 action-comedy hybrid Guardians of the Galaxy. Chris Pratt plays the eponymous group’s leader, Peter Quill and is accompanied by performances from Zoë Saldana, Dave Batista, Karen Gillan and the voice of Bradley Cooper as CGI produced character, Rocket. Vin Diesel was cast to motion capture for the lovable sapling, Groot, and the film features cameo appearances from Sylvester Stallone, Stan Lee and Seth Green. Kurt Russell takes the onus of the film’s “big bad.”
Sometime after the events of the first film, the guardians have been hired by an intergalactic master race know as the sovereign – a civilisation of gold-skinned (quite literally) beings who have genetically engineered themselves to be near enough faultless – to protect their precious batteries from an attack from a giant octopus-looking creature. Having successfully defended the sovereign’s livelihood in the batteries, the job seems to be going routinely until it’s revealed that Rocket (Cooper) had stolen a handful of said batteries knowing their value on the black market to be far greater than their payment. This prompts an intergalactic chase which forces the group to land on an uncharted planet in deep space which leads Peter to learn the truth about his lost parentage.
