Gritty music biopic starring Tom Hiddleston as booze-addled country and western icon Hank Williams. Yes, you read that right, everyone’s favourite privately educated, well-spoken quintessentially English actor, Hiddleston, playing an icon of the American South’s country music scene. Who cast that role?
Surprisingly Hiddo makes a good fist of it and belts out some good tunes such as Cold, Cold Heart and Lovesick Blues (he could be miming, who knows?) as he immerses himself in the role of the troubled star.
Williams is regarded as one of the most influential singer/songwriters of the 20th century, which is no mean feat for someone who was extremely limited in his ability to read or notate music. Fame came at huge cost to Williams and those close to him as his unpredictable nature and fondness for drink and drugs crippled any chance of sustained success.
This is a curiously casted oddity but is well worth watching nonetheless.
