Unsettling and atmospheric horror hokum for the ‘yoof’ market that puts a novel spin on promiscuity and the risks of getting more than you bargained for after sleeping around. In this instance, rather than a dose of the clap, unsuspecting teen Jay (Maika Monroe) sleeps with a chap, Hugh (Jake Weary), who reveals he’s passed on a malevolent spectre to her.
As the latest recipient of the potentially fatal curse she is plagued by visions of a strange figure that gets ever closer to her. Given that this is a teen horror film – quite an ingenious one, too – there is an obvious ‘get out of jail card’ that Jay can play. Yep, you guessed it, she can bed another unsuspecting lesser cast member and make the spirit their problem.
That would make the film a bit predictable, so the script writers give Jay a conscience and she vows celibacy. It goes without saying that none of her friends believe her seemingly paranoid rantings … but then they too begin to see the freaky phantom and the tension and pace crank up.
An original and worthwhile horror outing starring Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist, Olivia Luccardi, Lili Sepe Bailey Spryand and Collette Phillips.
