Film of the day: Kingsman: The Secret Service

Taron Egerton in Kingsman: The Secret Service

Network premiere of Kingsman Matthew Vaughn’s action-comedy, which pays violent homage to the James Bond franchise. Intelligent teenager Gary ‘Eggsy’ Unwin (Taron Egerton) lives on a London housing estate, where he perpetually gets into trouble with the law. But when he’s arrested for stealing a car, he rings a number given to his family years earlier by his late father’s colleague Harry Hart (Colin Firth).

Hart extricates Eggsy from police custody and tells him that his father was a Kingsman – a politically unaligned secret society of immaculately dressed agents who exist to save the world. Hart says there’s a current vacancy within the organisation, and that Eggsy should apply for it. Meanwhile, there’s a villainous tech billionaire at large, who intends to massacre mankind to save the planet – and only the Kingsmen can stop him. Also features Michael Caine, Mark Hamill and Samuel L Jackson.

Lots of violence, a sprinkling of bad language and a whole lot of fun – a sequel for which is released at the end of the month.

Kingsman – Sunday at 9.00pm on Channel 4.
