Film of the Day – Ladybird

Ladybird tells the coming of age story of a troubled Sacramento teen and her turbulent relationship with her mother. Starring Saoirse Ronan in the lead role as Christine “Ladybird” McPherson, the film also features performances from Laurie Metcalf, Tracy Letts and Timothée Chalamet.

A tale of longing, rebellion and romantic discovery comes to the fore in Greta Gerwig’s 2017 comedy-drama, Ladybird. Cantering on the turbulent adolescent years of Christine McPherson, nicknamed “Ladybird” by just about everyone she knows, the film sees the young girl transition from a girl trapped by her mother’s expectations and the strict catholic school she is forced to attend into an independent – if a little naive – young woman.

Christine’s mother is struggling to fend off a sense of empty nest syndrome and both she and her husband, Larry, are fighting to keep the family above water financially, thrusting Ladybird into a decision between her family life in Sacramento and her ambitions and dreams further afield. As she drifts further and further away from her mother, can Ladybird find a compromise or will she be forced to let go of her dreams before they’ve even come to fruition?
