Film of the day: Les Miserables

Les Miserables

Thrilling Oscar-nominated French drama from director Ladj Ly, set in the poor Parisian suburbs of Montfermeil and inspired by the classic Victor Hugo novel of the same name.

It’s 2018, and France have just won the FIFA World Cup. United behind their all-conquering football team, French people of all colours and classes celebrate on the Champs-Élysées. But away from the carnival atmosphere, a storm is brewing among the more disadvantaged in society.

Stéphane (Damien Bonnard), a police officer recently assigned to Montfermeil, is disillusioned when he sees his squad leader Chris (Alexis Manenti) bullying those he’s meant to be protecting and acting like an infallible god around the town. And this is all against the backdrop of warring factions struggling with each other for control of the streets. Montfermeil is a powder keg. And when disaffected youth Issa (Issa Perica) steals a lion cub from a local circus out of boredom, the fuse is lit.
