Film of the day: Little Miss Sunshine

Little Miss Sunshine

Released in 2006, Little Miss Sunshine quickly gained a cult following for its quirky indie feel and the excellent performances of its ensemble cast.

Greg Kinnear and Toni Collette star as the heads of the Hoover household, a dysfunctional suburban clan who flirt with aspiration and winning in life while lamenting the reality of their mundane existence. Kinnear is a motivational speaker and coach who has enjoyed no success in his own life but continues to blurt out his mantra of self-improvement and enrichment. He is father to Olive (Abigail Breslin), a star-struck, dance wannabe who lives her life in a fantasy bubble or pop videos and competing in talent shows and beauty pageants – she is encouraged in her dream by grandfather Alan Arkin, who has been kicked out of his retirement home for sleeping around and taking heroin.

Steve Carell is thrown in as the crisis case brother of Collette after the breakdown of his relationship with a student sends him into a fug of depression.

Escaping the madness of their home, the family embarks on an epic cross-country road trip that, as always in life, keeps them a few paces behind their unobtainable dream.
