Film of the day: Moonrise Kingdom

Moonrise Kingdom

Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward star alongside Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray and Frances McDormand in Wes Anderson’s excellent coming-of-age comedy-drama about a pair of smitten 12-year-olds.

It’s 1965 and Sam (Gilman) is attending the Camp Ivanhoe scout camp on the New England island of New Penzance. While on the island the previous year, Sam met Suzy (Hayward) at an am-dram performance of Benjamin Britten’s Noye’s Fludde; in the interim they’ve become penfriends and have fallen in love. Now they plan to run away together to a secluded bay they’ve called Moonrise Kingdom. And that’s what they do.

However, it’s not long before her parents (Murray and McDormand), the local police captain (Willis), the scoutmaster (Norton) and the fearsome woman from Social Services (Tilda Swinton) have set out in pursuit of the sweethearts. That would be bad enough for Sam and Suzy, but a fierce storm is also heading their way.

Moonrise Kingdom – Sunday at 4.35pm on FilmFour.
