Sam Claflin and Rachel Weisz star alongside Iain Glen and Holliday Grainger in the 2017 adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier’s 1950s novel, My Cousin Rachel. The film, a romantic drama by nature, tells the story of family tragedy, conspiracy and romance under the picturesque backdrops of Florence and a stately Cornish manor house.
The film focuses around a young boy, Phillip’s, life, explaining that he was orphaned as a child and taken in by his older cousin, Ambrose, whose deteriorating health prompts him to be forced to spend the winters in warmer climates abroad. During one of these excursions to Italy, when Phillip is a young man, Ambrose abruptly dies and with the whole situation shrouded in mystery, Phillip travels to Florence to meet his cousin’s widow, Rachel – who incidentally is a distant relative of both Ambrose and Phillip. Upon returning to Cornwall, the young Phillip is captivated by the widow’s beauty and a flawed and forbidden love – still tainted by distrust – begins to blossom.
My Cousin Rachel – Wednesday 6:10pm on Sky Premiere.
