In 1956 Marilyn Monroe (Michelle Williams), stepping foot on English soil for the first time, begins filming for her leading role in Sir Laurence Olivier’s (Kenneth Branagh) latest production, The Prince and the Showgirl.
The captivating star – young, beautiful and totally outrageous – took London by storm but such a warm and welcoming reception was not matched by Olivier who, struggling to meet her tiresome demands, was not giving her the love she felt she deserved.
Eager film enthusiast, Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne) desperate to be a part of the dazzling world of movie production, lands a job as the lighting assistant on set. In search of compassion, Marilyn turns to the young film assistant for comfort and Clark soon becomes infatuated with her beauty and charm, falling into what he knows, is way out of his depth.
Documenting those years in a diary – finally publishing his story in 2000 – we are offered a previously unseen insight, into the highs and lows of the young actress and her struggle to remain glamorous.
