Film of the Day: Rocketman (2019)

Dexter Fletcher’s award-winning musical biopic takes a dive into the world and career of the rocket man: Elton John. From his humble beginnings in Pinner, to a rough few years on the climb and coping with stardom, the film is sensitive but also honest about the good and bad that comes with a person’s life story.

It won people’s hearts but also won awards, including a Golden Globe for star Taron Egerton; Rocketman is a musical odyssey that lives up to the name musical, after all Elton John’s discography is used as a way narrate the film.

Expect glamour, tantrums and killer piano hooks alongside Elton’s meteoric rise from a shy but extremely talented boy, via his symbiotic collaboration with lyricist Bernie Taupin (Jamie Bell).

Also featuring Steven Mackintosh as Elton’s emotionally distant father, Stanley, Bryce Dallas Howard as his wayward and distracted mother, Gemma Jones as his doting grandma, Richard Madden as his charismatic lover and manager John Reid, and Stephen Graham as old-school promoter Dick James.
