Film of the Day – Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Rogue one

Upon Disney’s mergence with Lucas Arts many a classic Star Wars fan’s heart would have sunk, particularly so after the announcement of the arguably excessive schedule of new instalments into the franchise it planned to roll out before 2020.

However, with Rogue One’s arrival, any initial fears of the entertainment conglomerate – well known for its ‘cutesy’ children’s movies – warping the franchise into something it isn’t were quashed quickly as the 2015 prequel to The Empire Strikes Back paid dividends in both fan service and the charm of a stand-alone blockbuster. Starring Felicity Jones, Diego Luna and Ben Mendelsohn, Rogue One bridges the gap between the original Star Wars trilogy and the prequel films while marking the solo-directorial debut of Gareth Edwards.

After acclaimed engineer Galen Erso (Mads Mikkaelson) is abducted from his home and forced to design a world destroying super weapon, unprecedented in size and power, his daughter – Jyn Erso (Jones) – becomes a fugitive under the care of Forest Whitaker’s rebel leader Saw Gerrera. Some years later we find Jyn in custody following a series of minor crimes. She is abruptly freed by rebel intelligence officer, Cassian (Luna) who persuades her to recapture her father in order to prevent the Empire from finishing their super weapon, becoming embroiled in the political and moral warfare between the two factions.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – Wednesday 9:00pm on Sky Cinema (Sci-Fi and Horror).
