Film of the Day: Singin’ in the Rain (1952)

Gene Kelly directs and stars in this musical classic as Don Lockwood, the stuntman and silent film star who despises his screen star Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen).

He begins a terse and frustrated partnership with Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds) and the two, along with Cosmo (Donald O’Connor) make plans to break it big with a musical of their own.

With songs such as ‘All I do is Dream of You’, the titular ‘Singin’ in the Rain’, ‘Make ‘Em Laugh’ and the sunny and catchy ‘Good Morning’, this is one film that transcends into something quite different to how it begins.

Singin in the Rain is dreamlike and dreamed of, and Gene Kelly’s remarkable direction with Stanley Donen is a love letter to big-showbiz and musical theatre and film history.

Singin’ in the Rain – Boxing Day at 12.40pm on BBC Two
