Film of the Day – T2: Trainspotting

T2 Trainspotting

20 years after the original’s hit, director Danny Boyle returns to his psychedelic Edinburugh based film, 1996’s Trainspotting, with a sequel; the imaginatively named T2 Trainspotting. The film reprises the same cast as its predecessor given that it follows the group’s reintegration with one another and society 20 years on from the events of the first film. Ewan McGregor dons the mantle of Renton, Robert Carlyle plays the villain of the piece as Begbie, Johnny Lee Miller returns as Simon “Sickboy” Williamson and Ewen Bremner puts in an award-winning performance as the frightfully unstable “Spud.”

20 years after stealing sixteen thousand pounds from his three other drug-abusing friends, Mark Renton finds himself returning home from his new life in Amsterdam after suffering a heart attack. Elsewhere Spud has returned to heroin abuse while Sickboy runs a pub while harbouring a new-found cocaine addiction. Begbie, still having not forgiven Renton for his betrayal, is serving a 25 year prison sentence. Renton finds himself on an uneasy path of reconciliation with both his former friends and his family after finding out about his mother’s death. But will Begbie be so easily forgiving or will the burning rage he harbours put Renton in harm’s way?

T2: Trainspotting – Thursday 11:00pm on Sky Cinema (Thriller).
