Film of the day: Tanna

This week’s foreign-language gem is the Oscar-nominated, Venice award-winning Tanna, a Shakespearian tale of star-crossed lovers set on the titular South Pacific island – part of the nation of Vanuatu. In the shadow of a spitting volcano relations between two neighbouring tribes are nearing boiling point, and fears that things will only get worse prompt a meeting to discuss a potential peace deal.

As is the tradition it involves exchanging women for arranged marriages, but when the beautiful Wawa (Marie Wawa) refuses to be separated from chief’s grandson Dain (Mungau Dain) all hell breaks loose. Veteran documentarians Martin Butler and Bentley Dean write and direct.

Tanna – from Wednesday 13 September on Sky Cinema Premiere and Sky Cinema on Demand.
