Drawing inspiration from the folklore of Mexico’s Día de los Muertos, or day of the dead, The Book of Life is a colourful and captivating animated film that brings to life myth, tradition, music and love.

In the town of San Angel, two young men vie for the love of the mayor’s daughter, María Posada (Zoe Saldana). Manolo Sánchez (Diego Luna) comes from a family of bullfighters, but would prefer to be a musician, which sits well with María’s love of animals.

Joaquín Mondragon (Channing Tatum) aims to impress her with his bravery fighting bandits. The rivalry prompts the guardians of the dead – Kate del Castillo and Ron Perlman – to wager over which young man will win the woman’s heart. Manolo is forced to journey through both of the realms to prove his love for Maria.
