Film of the Day: The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959)

Hound of the Baskervilles

Peter Cushing, André Morell and Christopher Lee star in director Terence Fisher’s adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic Gothic mystery. The great detective Sherlock Holmes (Cushing) and his indefatigable sidekick Dr Watson (Morell) are called down to Dartmoor to investigate the killing of the latest in a long line of Baskerville Lords.

They are the latest of many who have met their end by the jaws of the ‘hound of hell’, a seemingly supernatural beast that has preyed on this branch of the aristocracy for centuries. Can Holmes discover what’s happening before the inheriting Sir Henry (Lee) meets the same fate as his ancestors? This acclaimed Hammer Film Productions movie was the first version of the tale to be made in colour.
