Film of the day – The King’s Speech

The King’s Speech - Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, Geoffrey Rush

During a week in which political speeches have been the topic of everyone’s conversation, it feels rather fitting that More4 will be showing The King’s Speech tonight, offering a thoughtful insight into the power words can behold.

George VI (Colin Firth) suffers from a terrible speech stammer that sees him freeze when faced with an eager audience. When he brother abdicates the throne; George is left to take the crown – a job that will of course require him to have a voice.

It falls to George’s wife, Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter) to pull him through, with the help of speech therapist Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush) with his unconventional and un-royal ways to overcome the stutter.

The movie is an incredibly absorbing real-life drama in the lead up to the Second World War. Directed by Tom Hooper, the story highlights the importance of friendship, love and loyalty in an uplifting film that will have you laugh and cry.

The King’s Speech playing on More4 – the 11 November 2016 at 9pm.
