Film of the day: The Northman

The Northman

The Northman is a highly stylised Nordic revenge saga from Robert Eggers starring Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Ethan Hawke and Anya Taylor-Joy.

There’s none of the romanticism you associate with the Norse epics, but there are plenty of heroic trials in this bloody, rain-sodden tale of a young lad’s burning desire for vengeance. Life gets pretty tough for young heir Amleth (Oscar Novak, then Skarsgård) after his father King Aurvandil War-Raven (Hawke) is betrayed and murdered – by his own brother, who also doubles the vendetta by taking the boy’s mother as his wife.

Growing up feral as a kind of lycanthropic berserker with other marauding Vikings, he never allows the treachery to be far from his mind and when he discovers his prey has relocated to Iceland, Amleth sets off for a showdown.

You’ll get wind-chill just watching this film but it is a brilliant piece that is brutal, surreal and turns prophecy and expectation on their heads.
