Film of the day: The Rider

The Rider

Chloé Zhao, the Oscar-winning director of Nomadland, writes and directs this critically acclaimed contemporary western, starring a cast of entirely non-professional Native American actors playing fictionalised versions of themselves on a Sioux reservation in South Dakota.

Brady (Brady Jandreau), a former rodeo star, lives a troubled existence with his heavy-drinking father Tim (Tim Jandreau) and autistic younger sister Lilly (Lilly Jandreau). The family have little money. After a devastating rodeo accident that left Brady with brain damage, doctors have told him he should no longer ride, or his condition will be made worse. For Brady, whose one true passion in life is horse riding, this is a shattering blow. As his family struggles with poverty, Brady contemplates returning to his old career – even if that means sacrificing his own health and future.

The Rider – Tuesday at 11.30pm on FilmFour.
