Starring Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer and Michael Shannon, The Shape of Water is exemplary of the unusual but captivating experiences you can find in the films of director Guillermo del Toro.

The mute caretaker and cleaner Elisa (Hawkins) works at a secretive research facility deep underground. The strict and dangerous Strickland (Shannon) runs the facility and keeps a humanoid aquatic creature there for experimentation.

Elisa gradually befriends the creature and learns of its intelligence and capacity for empathy and emotion. It changes up the mundanity of the daily shift and sparks a series of events that change more than just her life forever.

Winning the Oscar for best picture and taking home big wins at the BAFTAs and Golden Globes, The Shape of Water is an original and romantic film. As with a lot of del Toro’s work, it is more like a fairytale or a dream, where the characters stay with you as if they came out of a book.
