Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel star in this comedy-drama about ageing from Italian director Paolo Sorrentino.
Retired classical music conductor and composer Fred Ballinger is holidaying at a plush hotel in the Swiss Alps with his best friend, the veteran film director Mick Boyle. It’s supposed to be relaxing, but Ballinger’s tranquillity is disturbed by an emissary of the Queen, who wants him to perform one last time for her.
Meanwhile, Boyle is fretting because funding for his latest project relies on him securing the participation of his long-time leading lady Brenda Morel. The two men also pointedly and ruefully reflect on their lost youth and opportunities; something that’s not helped by the current Miss Universe’s penchant for shedding her clothes whenever she bathes in the hot tub with them. Rachel Weisz plays Ballinger’s daughter, who’s married to Boyle’s son, while Jane Fonda, Madalina Diana Ghenea and Paul Dano also appear.
Youth Tuesday 9.00pm on Film4.
