Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer look back at two very different downstairs dilemmas, with one family surrendering much of their living space to their pets and another struggling to entertain the community they serve.
In Royal Wootton Bassett, animals ruled the house for newly-weds Matt and Lucia. With much of the main living spaces given over to their rescued pets, the family-of-five were forced to all congregate in the small kitchen or poorly laid out lounge. Matt believed that with some alterations it could work for them, but Lucia was desperate to move somewhere fit for the family and pets alike. Whilst Phil had an upward struggle convincing Matt to list, Kirstie tried to solve all the downstairs issues without ending up in the doghouse. With more than just the family to consider, it proved to be a challenge for both sides.
In Alnwick, Baptist ministers Chris and Caroline were dealing with a severe lack of downstairs space in an already-extended property, as they both now work from and regularly host upwards of 14 people in their four-bed home. Local lad Chris was convinced that moving would be the answer, but Caroline believed that with help the house could work. So, whilst Kirstie grappled with a house that had already reached its potential, Phil faced one of his toughest searches to date with an extremely limited search area and a long list of boxes to tick. It was always going to be a tricky task for both of them to pull off, but who reigned victorious?
