Preview: Premier League – Liverpool v Chelsea

Liverpool v Chelsea

A season of toil and woe for two of the Premier League’s stellar clubs of the past few seasons. Liverpool v Chelsea a 12.30 kick-off on a Saturday? Most folk won’t be out of bed by that time if they’ve had a heavy Friday – but that is the tune that TV execs have set and we must dance to it.

Liverpool were truly dreadful at Brighton last week. They were overrun in midfield while being outthought and outfought in all other areas as they slipped to a miserable 0-3 defeat. A trip to Molineux in midweek for an FA Cup replay did not auger well, but a roll of the dice from Jurgen Klopp with a refreshed line-up shorn of Henderson, Salah, Robertson, Fabinho and Trent, and the Reds looked back to their old strutting self.

Former Brighton boss Graham Potter is having a similarly testing time at Chelsea. He has found managing expectation levels as challenging as managing the troubled West Londoners. Owner Todd Boehly continues to throw around transfer cash like money is going out of fashion, but it hasn’t drawn the results and team cohesion seems non-existent.

Games between these two are rarely boring and it seems incomprehensible that they could be scrapping over a Europa Conference spot at the end of the season. There is no room for ifs and buts for these two, a draw suits neither and anything less than three points could deliver a mortal blow to any aspiration of turning fortunes around.
