Raucous comedy starring Kevin Hart as an idiot who blows up the store he works at while proposing to his girlfriend, loses his job and realises that he didn’t complete high school and consequently can’t get another job. Tiffany Haddish stars as the night school teacher who must help him pass his exams. It’s safe to say that Teddy (Hart) ain’t academically gifted. He doesn’t know that his given name, Theodore, has an ‘h’ in it and when he opens his test paper on the first day of exams, the questions confuse his brain so much that they take flight and he tries to swat them like flies before storming out of the room accusing everyone taking their tests of being sheep. This is only worth mentioning because Teddy goes on to make something of himself without school, selling the idea of luxury patio living. He drives a Porsche. He has a beautiful girlfriend, Lisa (Megalyn Echikunwoke). He’s been BBQ City’s employee of the month for, well, forever. He’s one hell of a salesman. So much so, that Joe of Joe’s BBQ City has decided to turn the whole business over to Teddy when he retires. Boom! #setforlife. The icing on the cake? Marrying Lisa. He’s got it all planned. Dinner at a nice restaurant with friends then back to BBQ City, which he’s, ahem, decked out like the dream patio… but indoors. He tells her that they’re going to run the place together then drops a curtain that conceals the words ‘Marry Me Lisa’ in lights. Lisa says yes straight away. Could life get any better? No, it turns out. He pops a bottle of champagne, the cork hits a gasline, Joe’s BBQ City goes up in smoke – boom! – and with it his future. And guess what? To get another job, he needs to pass that exam he walked out of back in high school. So Teddy’s off to night school, where he meets formidable teacher Carrie (Haddish) – and they do not get on. Can she teach him? Can he be taught? Will he pass his high school exam? And will they always be just teacher and student? So many questions need answering.
