Back from the hinterland where cancelled series are sent when their rating plunge, this new take on the creepy 2014-16 drama treads the familiar supernatural territory (not geographically, though) – this time it is set against a background of Mexican-American folklore.
Los Angeles, 1938. LAPD detective Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) and his
partner, Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane), investigate a murder while the city
sits on the brink of social upheaval. While at City Hall, Tiago’s activist
brother Raul Vega battles with the fiery Councilman Charlton
Townsend over the construction of California’s first freeway.
Showtime and HBO (with the new Perry Mason) have both gone big with atmospheric 1940s-set period dramas. Let’s hope Penny Dreadful: City of Angels can be every bit as good as its predecessor and match the strong early episodes of Perry Mason.
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels – Wednesday at 9.00pm on Sky Atlantic.
