Pick of the day: House of the Dragon

Tom Glynn-Carney as Prince Aegon Targaryen

Episode 8 – The Lord of the Tides.

Fresh from last week’s decade-spanning leap forward in the storyline, here we are at episode 8 clocking another six years square on the chin. At this rate, the producers of the franchise will arrive at the original GoT timeline in little more than a couple of seasons.

The runners and riders for the Iron Throne are still jockeying for position while the ghoul-like King Viserys (played by Paddy Considine) still breathes – wonders never cease.

The Queen (Olivia Cooke) and scheming father Otto ‘The Hand’ Hightower are defacto rulers of the kingdom – interpreting the death rattle of the king to suit the best interests of their House.

This doesn’t go down too well with the actual heir, Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and her uncle/husband (Matt Smith). With the added complication of Lord Corlys’s demise at the hands of pirates and the succession of the Driftwood up for grabs, the illegitimacy of Rhaenyra’s kids is again in the spotlight. Poor little dears.

This episode feels like the prelude to a coming storm and also confirms if confirmation were needed, that the two Princes (on the Targaryen-Hightower side) Aemond and Aegon, though not illegitimate are the biggest bastards in the whole of the seven kingdoms.

House of the Dragon – Monday at 9.00pm on Sky Atlantic and Now.
