Pick of the Day: House of the Dragon

Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower - House of the Dragon

Episode 8 of 9. The Green Council

We’ve reached the penultimate episode of the opening Opus that is breathing new life into the GoT franchise. After Paddy Considine’s storming performance last week as the soon to be ex King Viserys, whose tender patriarchy and determination to unite his family in his last hours, are shown to have been efforts in vain. Queen Alicent (Olivia Cooke) and her pappy, the ‘Hand of the King’ Otto Hightower have stolen the opportunity to install one of their own on the Iron Throne. Sex pest Aegon’s ascension is the catalyst we’ve been waiting for. He is exactly the King this series needs.

It goes without saying that this does not go down well with Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy), the actual heir, or Daemon, the late King’s brother. But who cares, the move of the Hightowers set the skittles flying and The Dance of the Dragons civil war is now the inevitable finale to the season.

House of the Dragon – Monday at 9.00pm on Sky Atlantic and Now.
