Pick of the day: House of the Dragon

Emma D'Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen - The House of the Dragon

The Black Queen

The House of the Dragon has been a brilliant reboot of George R Martin’s GoT sagas. It has been familiar enough to keep happy its existing fanbase but unique and intrigue-rich enough to win many new subjects to its banner.

King Viserys is dead and his son but not his heir, Aegon II, sits atop the Conqueror’s throne, wields the Conqueror’s sword, and bears the Conqueror’s name. News of last week’s hastily arranged coronation has finally arrived at Dragonstone where the actual heir Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) is holed up with her husband and brood.

With news of the treachery, Daemon (Matt Smith) sets about discovering which of the great houses can be relied upon and which cannot. He knows there will be war and is hungry for it. Rhaenyra, like the usurper’s mother Queen Alicent, shows a mother’s reluctance to bring war and death to the realm. As human and compassionate as these central female characters are, there is no stopping what is about to befall them.

House of the Dragon – Monday at 9.00pm on Sky Atlantic and Now.
