Pick of the day: The Last of Us

The Last of Us

The Last of Us has been revelatory so far. For anyone put off by the omnipresent ‘adapted from the hit video game’ blurb, don’t be – this is a fine drama. If you haven’t tuned in yet, you might want to do a bit of a catch-up. It will be worth your while.

We’re 20 years after modern civilization gets the fungal infection of all infections and becomes the unwitting host and food for Cordyceps. Joel, a seasoned survivor, is tasked with smuggling Ellie, a 14-year-old girl with immunity to the infection, out of a controlled quarantine zone.

Tonight’s episode, the third of nine is a brilliant exploration of love in the bleakest circumstances. Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett kill it as the leads and bring so much heart to the show. We get to see a side of humanity that makes all of Joel and Ellie’s struggles worth it. It’s an episode, just like love, that sticks with you long after it’s over.
