Bacchus

The historian Bettany Hughes offers this guide to the ancient god of wine.

Bacchus as he was known to the Romans, or Dionysus are he was known to the Greeks, certainly has claim to perhaps being the most fun god if the thing he is devoted to is anything to go by. Hughes’s programme goes all the way back to Georgian wine pots from 8,000 years ago to 1960’s counterculture Britain.

Along the way there is a festival on the island of Skyros consisting of people wearing 60kg of bells and masks made from prematurely born goats, and some interesting similarities between Bacchus and Jesus on Cyprus.

Bacchus Uncovered: Ancient God of Ecstasy is on BBC Four at 21.00.
