Being blacker

The BBC’s intimate new documentary, Being Blacker, tells the story of the renowned reggae record shop owner and music producer Blacker Dread, his extended family, friends and the wider Brixton community. Exploring the Jamaican-born record producer’s tumultuous life – including his mother’s death and the prospect of his first prison sentence – the film takes a closer look at the man behind the dreads.

While the documentary focuses primarily on the local legend’s life, it also features a wider cast – best friend and former armed robber Naptali struggles to get away from a life of crime, Blacker’s sister June is trying to maintain family ties after their mother’s death, and his partner Maureen is ensuring their youngest son maintains his exceptional school grades in Jamaica, having been excluded from school in the UK.

Being Blacker – Friday 11:05pm on BBC2.
