Neil Oliver Neil Oliver at the Stones of Stenness

In this new three-part documentary, we see many a famous face looking at the history of this group of islands just off Scotland.

During the series we see Neil Oliver looking the tombs and monuments of the islands, Chris Packham searching for whales and the local species of vole, Dr. Shini Somara looks at how their the ancient peoples built their stone circles which in turn inspired Stonehenge, and Andy Torbet examines the region’s geology by climbing a sea-stick.

Of course, there is still one really important to thing to remember about the islands: whatever you do, don’t refer to them as “The Orkneys” – Orkney is already plural and the residents hate Orkney begin referred to as this.

Britain’s Ancient Capital: Secrets of Orkney is on BBC Two at 21.00.
