With the escalating tension between the USA and North Korea, what could be better than a documentary about how Britain developed its first H-bomb? Well, something less scary obviously, but this is on tonight, so we’ll stick with this.
This documentary is not about the moral issues over nuclear weapons and their dangers, but simply the story of how Britain joined the nuclear arms race, codenamed Operation Grapple X, 12 years after the American’s launched the first nuclear bomb.
Among the highlights in the programme include a look inside the top secret Aldermaston research facility, to some of the bizarre stories about how the bomb was developed: including how the story of how a car continuing plutonium broke down outside a south London pub.
Britain’s Nuclear Bomb: the Inside Story is on BBC Four at 21.00.
