Preview – British Empire: Heroes and Villains

David Olusoga

In this episode of Timewatch, David Olusoga, whose recent documentaries about Britain’s black history have been big hits, investigates the way that we have covered the history of the British Empire.

British Empire: Heroes and Villains is not an investigation as to whether the British Empire was good or bad, but a look at how British TV has depicted the Empire, including material about slavery in the Caribbean, trouble in post-independence India and the pillaging of material wealth in Africa.

Programmes covered by Olusoga include 1972 programme The British Empire which angered the House of Lords and witnessed protests from the show’s producers against material being watered down.

British Empire: Heroes and Villains is on BBC Four at 21.00.
