The final season of the Broadchurch triptych opens tonight on ITV1. As you’d expect from a small, sleepy, unremarkable seaside town, Broadchurch has dropped out of the media glare and DI Alec Hardy and DS Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) are getting on with the mundane policing that doesn’t make for great crime drama but is the bread and butter of detectives up and down the country. Three years have elapsed since the pair broke the Sandbrook case but the relative peace of the town is shattered when a serious sexual assault takes place.
Ellie and Hardy are called out to investigate the allegation and find there is no doubt she’s been raped – but where, and when, and by whom? As they gather evidence it becomes clear that this was not an opportunist attack, it was planned … and the perpetrator is still free in Broadchurch.
