With Broken, written by Jimmy McGovern, the BBC is bringing to screens a drama of our times. This a six-parter takes an unsentimental view of urban community and how those struggling to make ends meet find .

Sean Bean is excellent as a conflicted Catholic priest, Father Michael Kerrigan, who struggles to reconcile his faith with the realities of life faced by his parishioners. In tonight’s opener, attempts to help a single mother-of-three whose life spirals out of control through debt and the stress of bereavement.

This is a real return to form for McGovern, while both Bean and Anna Friel as the young woman deliver strong performances and help convey the desperation faced by low income families trying to make ends meet.

Broken – Tuesday 9.00pm on BBC One. Originally scheduled for last week but cancelled due to the events in Manchester.
