Preview – Bute: the Scot Who Spent a Welsh Fortune

John Critchon-Stuart

Having previously aired just in Wales, BBC Four gives a wider airing to this profile of Scottish aristocrat John Critchon-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute.

During the reign of Queen Victoria, the marquess was the richest person in the empire, earning £15million per year in today’s money. His passion was building projects, including restoring Cardiff Castle, but he was also an early support of women’s rights.

Bute: the Scot Who Spent a Welsh Fortune is on BBC Four at 19.30.
