The final part of this thought-provoking take on Joseph Heller’s classic wartime satire sees Yossarian (Christopher Abbott) maintain his poor run of luck. Having been hit by shrapnel, which splits his scrotum, he is told that if he had lost a testicle, he would have been discharged from service. A centimetre left or right and his ambition of escape from the humanity-consuming military-industrial complex would have been fulfilled.
Unfortunately, after a brief convalescence at an Italian villa he is returned to base and the attentions of his nemesis Scheisskopf (George Clooney), with whose wife (if you remember, episode one) he had an affair.
The reappearance of Scheisskopf and his fixation with meaningless drill tidily bookends the absurdity of war and the impotence of Yossarian’s protest.
Catch-22 – Thursday at 9.00pm on Channel 4.
