Friedrich Engels, co-author of The Communist Manifesto, is being honoured with a statue of himself being erected in Manchester.
The statue is one originally from Ukraine that was abandoned and is now being sent over by Turner Prize-nominated artist Phil Collins. It is being erected in honour of Engels’s 1845 work The Condition of the Working Class in England, a book written in Manchester that helped to develop his communist ideas.
Extracts from the book are read by Maxine Peake, and there are interviews with modern-day working class Mancunians.
Ceremony: The Return of Friedrich Engels is on BBC Four at 21.40.
