Charley Pride is one of the biggest stars in country music – an achievement made all the more notable by the fact he was black performer who rose to stardom in the 1960s.
Growing up the segregated south, he became a baseball player before eventually becoming big in the world of music. He obviously had to fight several prejudices though. When his first record came out in 1966, no promo video or bio came with it for fear it would put off white audiences.
Various stars from the country world, including Dolly Parton, contribute to this programme, narrated by Tanya Tucker.
Charley Pride: I’m Just Me is on BBC Four at 21.30.
