here is one relationship in all our lives that is often more frustrating, more heartbreaking, more hilarious and more revealing than any other: the relationship we have with our parents.
For the first time since she was a teenager, singer Charlotte Church is spending time alone with her mum and dad, in an isolated part of Devon, for a week. The purpose of the trip is for them to explore a relationship that is full of love; but one which is also, at times, incredibly difficult.
This heart-warming, life-affirming and extraordinarily honest programme follows the Churches, a normal working-class family from Cardiff, who just happened to have a superstar daughter, as they try to spend quality time together. The intensity of Charlotte’s relationship with her mother Maria is revealed.
Increasingly it becomes apparent that there’s a major issue from the past that parents and daughter have never been able to resolve – an issue that dates back to the height of Charlotte’s fame, when the 16-year-old left home and didn’t speak to her mum for over a year, and Maria had a nervous breakdown. Uncovering the painful realities of what happens when a normal family experience fame for the first time, but also celebrating the extraordinary way all of their lives changed, the Churches start to realise there are some things they’ve never said to each other, and now is the time to do it.
Charlotte Church – My Family and Me – Thursday at 9.00pm on Channel 4.
