The National Health Service is a treasured institution and a miracle of post-war opportunity, but after years of neglect, privatisation and mismanagement, its performance and capacity has been pushed to the absolute limits.

Eighteen months into the worst pandemic in a century, there are staff shortages, no PPE provided, and a chronic culture of overwork.

Journalist Matthew Syed travels around the country and asks some tough questions about the NHS and finds out the good and bad about our healthcare provision, seeing what other countries are doing to set an example.

Dispatches – Monday at 8pm on Channel 4
