Barry Cryer’s series looking back at great comics looks back at someone that may be unfamiliar with many Brits: Jack Benny.

Benny was most famous for his radio and later TV series that was pioneering back in the 1930s and 1940s, doing stuff that was experimental even before the more well-known Goons in the UK, with Benny playing a version of himself that was supposedly the most miserly man in the world (“I’m not telling you how much insurance I carry with the Prudential, but all I can say is when I go, they go”). His show also helped other future stars, with one regular on his show being Mel Blanc, the voice of Bugs Bunny.

Comedy Legends is on Sky Arts at 21.00.
